Out with the junk, in with the music

The Foo Fighters have shown the world that garages can be used for more than just storing cars and junk.

Wasting Light Foo Fighters (CD)

Foo Fighters' newest album, Wasting Light, rocketed to number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the first week it was released. The band's seventh album revives their earlier fast-and-fierce sound. With founding guitarist Pat Smear returning as an official member, Foo Fighters do what they do best: hard-hitting rock with high-reaching choruses.

Music murdered by vocalist

Canadian rockers Tokyo Police Club should be arrested for producing what is arguably one of the year's most boring albums. Their debut album Elephant Shell is a two-disc collection of 19 songs, each of which lasts about two minutes.

The biggest problem is the band's tendency to use unnecessarily technical or challenging language in their lyrics.

Champion & Co can ensure Prebble has his day

Brett Prebble is one of only two jockeys with a full book of 10 rides at today's big Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize meeting at Sha Tin and the outstanding Aussie looks set for a big one, with most of his rides well in the market on overnight prices.

Luckless Couldn't Care Less should be taken seriously

Andreas Schutz has done a terrific job in turning around the career of the once reluctant Couldn't Care Less and the rejuvenated grey looks set to make amends for a sequence of bad luck in the opening leg of Sunday's Triple Trio at Sha Tin.

Fownes' Nirvana ready to lay claim to the Valley

Happy Valley's dominant stable, the Caspar Fownes yard, looks ready to strike in tonight's Tung Wah Centenary Challenge Cup (1,000m) with the lightly raced four-year-old Nirvana.

12 Dec 2007 - 12:00am

Jade saves O'Sullivan's day

For the man who spent most of the season as the one most likely to pull back Caspar Fownes' lead in the trainers' championship race, Paul O'Sullivan was surprisingly grateful for his lone winner on Day 78 of the term with Jade Dragonfly.

Live is good but loud is better

The Foo Fighters have surprised everyone with a live album that lacks their usual boisterous sound.

Led by singer Dave Grohl, the band has stripped their songs down to their core, which is probably why they chose to name this album Skin and Bones.

Three days of civilised debauchery smells like sporting nirvana

I know the lyrics are easy to sing along to, but still, how did Sweet Caroline get to be the Sevens anthem? It would have been far better to go with something a little more bone jarring and apropos like Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Sprit. Come on, sing along. 'Here we are now, entertain us. I feel stupid and contagious.'

Question of the week: What's your favourite musical act?

Joe Slater, 14

Kurt Cobain. His sound revolu-tionised the music industry. The change from metal to grunge was sensational, and awoke the young generation to rebellion. The pounding rhythms of Nirvana's songs created a doorway for teens to express themselves, and gave that generation a voice they could relate to.

Nirvana

Nirvana's greatest hits - it had to happen sooner or later, and just in time for Christmas too!

Staying in

MusicUnplugged In New York. Nirvana (Geffen Records). The most disturbing thing about the MTV Unplugged series is that it exposes the basic failing of rock music: without all that volume and distortion there isn't an awful lot left. There aren't many pop musicians out there writing music that can stand the 'unplugged' treatment.

18 Dec 1994 - 12:00am

Unplugged can come unstuck

TURN on, tune in, and unplug is the mantra being chanted by the music industry. It seems everyone is taking a stab at going acoustic, thanks to MTV.
