Norsk Hydro withdraws offer for Asia Aluminum

Norwegian aluminium giant Norsk Hydro has dropped its rescue offer for troubled mainland firm Asia Aluminum Holdings after just five days.

Yara sells BlueChem shares for HK$326m

Yara International, a Norwegian supplier of mineral fertilizers, has offloaded half of its stake in China BlueChemical for HK$326 million in a placement yesterday, market sources said.

Yara sold 80.5 million BlueChemical shares at HK$4.05 each, near the top end of the initial price range of HK$3.98 to HK$4.11 each, according to a sale document obtained by fund managers.

Strike threatens terminal

A strike will shut down Norway's Mongstad terminal and refinery unless a new central wage contract is sealed between union and management officials, a spokesman for state-owned Statoil said. Arbitration has begun in stalled wage talks between the YS skilled workers' central union and the Norwegian Industry Federation (NHO).

Japan newbuilding permits fall sharply

JAPAN'S Ministry of Transport issued newbuilding permits for 30 vessels totalling 620,000 gross tonnes (gt) last month.

The number of permits, involving domestic and export ships, was down 15 vessels (190,000 gt) from July, according to the figures.

Seven vessels are scheduled for delivery this year and 23 next year.

FEW people are aware of Norway's principal export to Hongkong - nickel. Many know about Norway's second-biggest export - salmon - according to Mr Lars Almklov, the Norwegian vice-consul.
