A North Korean state media outlet has accused the United States of “jumping to conclusions” that the North would soon stage a nuclear test, adding to the confusion over its immediate intentions.

North Korea, poised to conduct a nuclear test any day now, has posted a video on YouTube depicting a US city resembling New York engulfed in flames after an apparent missile attack.

The footage was uploaded on Saturday by the North’s official website, Uriminzokkiri, which distributes news and propaganda from the state media.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has chaired a high-level meeting that discussed a looming “great turn” in military capability, state media said on Sunday, fuelling expectations of an imminent nuclear test.

South Korea’s military said on Tuesday it had formed a crisis management task force to monitor North Korea’s nuclear site ahead of an expected atomic test, which Seoul said could be imminent.

A British grandmother convicted for smuggling cocaine into Bali yesterday filed an appeal against her death sentence. Lindsay Sandiford, 56, received the death penalty last week for smuggling almost 5kg of cocaine worth US$2.4 million into Indonesia last May.

China's changing role in the world has meant its approach towards ally North Korea has had to evolve. Its support of a UN resolution condemning the country's recent rocket launch and tightening sanctions makes plain its willingness to accept its responsibility. But there is only so much Beijing can do to end the isolationist country's threats and intransigence.
