Expect rainy days - but no more than usual

It's not raining more than usual in Hong Kong; it only feels like it sometimes, as the city gets pounded with increasingly intense downpours due to global warming, the Observatory said yesterday in presenting its annual forecasts.

Nock-ten's outer bands to bring squally rain

Strong winds and squally rain from the outer bands of Severe Tropical Storm Nock-ten began buffeting Hong Kong last night, prompting the Observatory to raise the No 3 strong wind signal.

It warned people to stay away from coastal areas and take precautionary measures but said it was unlikely that the No 8 signal would be raised if the storm continued on its present path.

Season's fifth storm heads towards city

The approaching Tropical Storm Goni cooled the city's air markedly yesterday afternoon after temperatures had hovered above 34 degrees Celsius for two days.

The Observatory issued the No1 signal at 3.45pm, warning people against the fifth storm to affect the city this year.

Peer behind the celestial veil without opening your door

In a first for Hong Kong, armchair stargazers will soon be able to look beyond the solar system from their homes using a telescope they can control via the internet. But they may have to wait a few years.

The $850,000 telescope, with a 60cm diameter, will be part of an Interactive Astronomical Observatory in Sai Kung.

Genuine change?

On browsing the Hong Kong Observatory's Web site and viewing the yearly weather summary, I noted that our weather has become increasingly warmer since 1997 (the observatory only provides data from 1997 onwards).
