For our retirement, we intend to purchase an inexpensive laptop computer. Can you recommend freeware or other inexpensive software alternatives to Microsoft's Office suite?

Upgrade takes iWork suite to a new level of professionalism

It seems I am not the only fan of Apple's new office productivity suite, iWork. Based on retail sales, it has become the No2 office suite after Microsoft's Office, according to a recent report from market researcher NPD Group.

What makes the report remarkable is that the software suite is No2 for all operating systems, even though it is only available for Mac OS X.

Get into the habit of using Windows rival iWork - it works well

I am a creature of habit. My daily work used to include opening Microsoft Office to write columns, proposals and presentations, but this week I changed over to Apple's new iWork (US$79 http://store.apple.com) application as a test to determine whether it was more useful than its Office counterparts.

It is nice that Office 2004 can remember

I look forward to each new version of Microsoft's Office for Mac with great enthusiasm because this suite of business applications (Word, Entourage, Excel and PowerPoint) is where Mac users spend most of their time.

Developers go a few extra yards for rival Mac

For years, conspiracy theorists in the Macintosh community have tried to persuade others that Microsoft is not serious about the Mac. As one of the first to embrace Apple's OS X, Microsoft has been a good friend to Apple, even if there may have been some legal nudging.

Free office suite opens door to Word files

I refer to the anonymous letter published in the Technology section on February 25 on the widespread use of Microsoft Office products by government bodies, thereby encouraging people to use Microsoft products.

Your correspondent's claim that no other software can legally read Microsoft Word's proprietary data format is incorrect.

Selecting the soundest of software systems

MY company has just bought five IBM compatible PCs which we want to use for the standard office tasks of word processing, performing spreadsheet and accounting functions and database maintenance. Our computers came bundled with Windows 3.1 - which is justas well since none of my employees are particularly computer-literate.
