Customs officers arrested eight men, seized 5,300 litres of illicit diesel fuel worth HK$28,000 and impounded three oil tankers yesterday. Officers said two of the tankers had been converted into fuel manufacturing workshops and used as mobile filling stations.

Tighter rules set for mainland oil transport trade

Mainland authorities are to tighten the rules on the management of oil transportation and anti-pollution supervision from July 1.

The authorities have issued a regulation - Management Regulations of China on Oil Transport Safety and Anti-Pollution.

The regulation aims to protect the safety of tankers and oil terminals, and prevent water pollution.

Suspect in oil tanker accident surrenders

A man surrendered to police last night, 11 hours after a tanker suspected of carrying smuggled diesel oil overturned on Tuen Mun Road after a collision with a taxi. Its driver fled.

The truck, carrying more than 5,000 litres of oil, blocked the road opposite Belvedere Garden, Tsuen Wan, bringing Kowloon-bound traffic to a tail-back of 4.5km during the morning rush-hour.

Bonded oil depot on Hainan

China has set up a 30 million yuan (about HK$27.93 million) bonded oil depot on Hainan, Xinhua (the New China News Agency) says.

The depot was set up by the Hainan Ruiyin Fuel and Chemicals Co to provide oil for international cargo ships and fishing vessels.

UDHK angered by temporary fuel depot

THE United Democrats said they were shocked to hear the Provisional Airport Authority (PAA) had opted for a temporary fuel supply depot for the new airport instead of a permanent one.

They were critical of locating the depot in Sha Chau - an island near Chek Lap Kok - saying this would pose a threat to rare white dolphins whose habitat was nearby.
