An Okinawan lawyer has branded as racist mainland Japanese who have been railing against efforts by residents of the island prefecture to reduce the US military presence there.

Plan for early warning base on Okinawan island in doubt

Japan may have to scrap plans to build an early warning base for its Self-Defence Forces on the Okinawan island of Yonaguni after the local government put an exorbitant price on the land required for the facility.

Japan and the United States yesterday agreed on a plan that will see some land occupied by the US military returned to the islands in a bid to break the deadlock in a long-stalled deal. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US Ambassador John Roos issued a joint statement on the agreement, under which five US military facilities and other areas on Okinawa's main island will return to Japan over the years.
