Old Master Q a 'painkiller' for readers, says writer

The formula hasn't changed in half a century, says Joseph Wong Chak, who took over from his father, Alfonso Wong Kar-hei, in producing Old Master Q when he retired in the 1990s.

Man behind 'Old Master Q' calls on next generation

Famed Hong Kong caricaturist Joseph Wong Chak is calling young and talented artists to help him continue his comedic legacy, as he celebrates the 50th anniversary of his well-loved Old Master Q series.

Wong, who left his handprint yesterday for the soon-to-be-opened Avenue of Comic Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui, said the series was an indelible part of local history.

Instead of Japanese manga and martial arts anime, the city's favourite comic read was once a strip called Old Master Q by Alfonso Wong Kar-Hei.

Alfonso Wong Kar-hei created Old Master Q, one of the best-loved and most enduring Chinese comic book characters ever. Yet the former Hong Kong resident tried to dissuade his children from following in his footsteps, saying comic artists get little respect and have poor prospects.

A big draw

Comics take many forms, especially if they are much loved. So it will come as no surprise to fans of Alfonso Wong's Old Master Q that the cartoon, first serialised in 1964 and still in publication, is featured on a baroque-style chair in The Luxe Manor, a boutique hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui whose interiors mix Oriental and European decor to surreal effect.

Comics more than just a laughing matter

In 1956 Chan Gi-dol, Li Fan-fu, Cheng Ka-chen, Wong Sui, Li Ling-han and Au Qing founded the weekly Comics World, which became the period's best-selling example of cartoon art.

The style was a consolidation of work by artists and writers from the mainland and Hong Kong, and served as a cradle to nurture the talent that grew to dominate the business.
