Leonard Lauder donates US$1b in Cubist works to New York gallery

Cosmetics billionaire Leonard Lauder has given the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art an astonishing, collection of Cubist art that he assembled over four decades, the museum announced. The enormous gift, estimated to be worth US$1 billion, includes 78 works by Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Leger, and "will transform the museum," the gallery said.

Police investigating a multimillion euro art heist say they are following up several tips from the public, a day after thieves grabbed seven paintings from the walls of a Rotterdam gallery and vanished into the night.

Picasso and Monet paintings among seven stolen in Rotterdam raid

Thieves broke into a Rotterdam museum yesterday and walked off with works from the likes of Picasso, Monet, Gauguin and Matisse, potentially worth hundreds of millions of euros.

Police haven't said how they pulled it off, but an expert who tracks stolen art said the robbers knew what they were after.

Several paintings have been stolen from a museum in the Dutch city of Rotterdam that was exhibiting works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Vincent van Gogh.

State news agency NOS said a Matisse painting called “The Reading Girl” was taken during the heist, which according to the police took place late on Monday, or in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Master's strokes prove too abstract for preschoolers

My four year-old daughter refers to Pablo Picasso as 'Pigasso'. It's not a problem with her enunciation because even I say Pigasso when I'm speaking to her. That's because her first exposure to the great artist came from a children's storybook, When Pigasso Met Mootisse, by Nina Laden. Laden illustrates the characters and their environment in the styles of Picasso and Matisse.

The opening night of Art HK 12 witnessed an incredible turnout. It was hard to tell whether people came to appreciate or to acquire, but it's perhaps telling that an official T-shirt bore the statement 'Money creates taste'.

Stroke of bad luck for Picasso enthusiasts

Visitors hoping for a colourful souvenir of Hong Kong's biggest exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso are walking away with nothing more than a photocopied leaflet.

While a colourful brochure is normally a must at art exhibitions, organisers of the Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris exhibition at the Heritage Museum in Sha Tin have not finished producing it.
