Villagers offer to buy back idle plot

Villagers accused of occupying government land for more than 30 years want to buy the land back if the government is not developing it. This came as Lands Department officers erected posts and signs along the boundary of the plot in Pai Tau village, Sha Tin, yesterday after the ombudsman in January criticised the government for ignoring misuse of the land for three decades.

Three government departments have finally pledged to tackle the illegal activity on a piece of official land - after ignoring its misuse for 30 years.

The Lands, Transport, and Home Affairs departments are all responsible for the site in the New Territories in different ways.

Man accused of injuring wife with liquid

An unemployed man accused of throwing corrosive liquid at his wife because he suspected she was having an affair appeared in Sha Tin Court yesterday. Wong Chi-sing, 59, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm, with intent, to Song Ziqin at their home in Pai Tau Tsuen in Sha Tin on June 28. Their nine-year-old daughter, Wong Ching-yeung, was also hurt. The accused did not enter a plea.

Customs officers arrested five men and seized 5,000 pirated compact discs and 21 CD-writers worth a total of $100,000 when they raided a house in Pai Tau Hang, Sha Tin. The five men, aged 18 to 42, included four mainland two-way permit holders.

Mother held at knifepoint

A man, 27, was forced to hand over $500, 200 yuan (HK$190), a mobile phone and a pair of sports shoes as an intruder held his mother, 48, at knifepoint in a house in Pai Tau Tsuen, Sha Tin. The robber was still at large last night.

IIs 'try to snatch revolver'

Two mainland illegal immigrants allegedly tried to snatch a police revolver from a constable in the Prince of Wales Hospital. The two, aged 23 and 27, had been arrested in Pai Tau Tsuen, Sha Tin, at 7am and complained of feeling unwell.

Cleaner's head trapped

A 17-year-old worker trapped his head between an escalator and a wall while cleaning the moving stairway in Sha Tin New Town Plaza in Pai Tau Street. Firemen pulled him out and he was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital, where he was in stable condition.
