Amateur chef cherishes her old-school Thai

Property consultant Barbara Sturdy has always been fascinated with food. She discovered Cantonese cuisine at the age of six in Hamburg, Germany, where she grew up. Having lived in Hong Kong for more than 20 years, she has a clear understanding of the area's cuisines and more than 10,000 images to prove it.

Juicy fruit fit for kings

Watermelon is the perfect summer dessert - crisp, refreshing, thirst-quenching - and it even comes in its own natural packaging, so you don't have to think about finding a big container when you want to take it to a barbecue.

It's also well suited to savoury dishes, especially salads that normally contain tomatoes, and can be used to replace or complement its fellow red fruit.

Curried chickpeas with yogurt

Occasionally, I mix up a batch of these chickpeas and keep them in the fridge to eat as a snack (with vegetables) or a quick sandwich (stuffed into warm pita bread). This recipe makes a lot; it can be halved if you like.

As with all canned legumes, rinse the chickpeas thoroughly to take away the tinned taste.

2 cans of chickpeas (about 400 grams each)
