Have Your Say

Solve the problems we already have

I'm very concerned about Hong Kong people's obsession with having the right to vote for our leader.

While I understand their concerns, I feel the government has more urgent issues to address. For example, tackling poverty. Some children have to help their parents make money by collecting cardboard boxes before school.

Jewish community registers dismay at Palestinian principal's school speeches

The Hong Kong International School (HKIS) has come under fire from sections of the Jewish community over speeches to parents and children by a visiting Palestinian school principal.

Rabbi Yaakov Kermaier of the Ohel Leah Synagogue said some members of the community had expressed concern at a series of speeches by Azmi Shahin at the beginning of this month.

Mideast's tragic history

I refer to Tang Ip-wai's letter 'Terrorist outrages date back further than Munich' (Sunday Morning Post, September 15). He lectures that Roth Shohamarov, whose coach was murdered by terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics, 'must not forget the 91 people . . . in the bombing of King David Hotel'.

Jerusalem the best site

Jonathan Gray's suggestion to have the UN headquarters in Hong Kong (South China Morning Post, August 3) is a pretty good idea, but maybe that thought could be carried even further.

Put the headquarters in Jerusalem and legislate that the areas surrounding the building be weapons-free. It might give Palestinians and Israelis an opportunity to put a stop to all the violence.

Arabs and Jews can live together in harmony

I am pleased that Sabine Wolf-Gilbert, in her reply to my letter of July 16, believes that (presumably the majority of) Israelis want a Palestinian state established as soon as possible (South China Morning Post, July 23). In this respect the Israelis, to whom she is referring, are finally seeing eye to eye with the Palestinian people.

A logical approach

There is no guarantee that the Israeli decision to move into Palestinian towns will end Palestinian suicide bomb attacks. What is more guaranteed is that the presence of the Israeli military will further infuriate the Palestinians.

Mahathir fails to prevail over definition of terror

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's hopes of forging a consensus among diverse Muslim nations on what constitutes terrorism were dashed yesterday as worsening violence in the Middle East hardened positions at a major summit.

Bloodletting is likely to continue unabated

The indignation people feel towards the terrorist attacks in New York City [and Washington] is easy to understand.

However, we have to ask why these terrorists were so well prepared. Why were they willing to kill themselves and thousands of innocent Americans?

Words without reason

How typical it is of the tortuous Arab-Israeli conflict that at the very moment when one man touches all hearts by his humanity and commitment to the peace process, another is engaging in the barren and inflammatory rhetoric of hate.

'That we lost a great man who made the peace of the brave with us. He was our partner and we thank you for continuing his road and his march.' - Yasser Arafat, when asked what he told Yitzhak Rabin's widow during a private visit.
