Officers seize 600kg of dead pangolins

A mainland-bound boat carrying 600kg of frozen pangolins - an endangered scaly anteater - was intercepted in Deep Bay by the Marine Department in an anti-smuggling operation.

Funding increased to protect species at risk

The Ocean Park Conservation Foundation has announced a record annual budget of HK$5.63 million to expand and diversify its project to preserve endangered species like freshwater turtles and pangolins.

These two species are under threat from excessive hunting and illegal traders who prey on them to make Chinese medicine and food.

Wildlife smugglers were caught yesterday trying to ship 1,800 rare pangolins out of Hong Kong.

About 150 boxes containing skinned, vacuum-packed pangolins - a protected species - were unloaded from trucks in Sai Kung Country Park on Monday night ready to be put onto a mainland-bound boat.

Medicines covered in endangered species law

Traders have been given a three-month grace period to dispose of medicines that contain parts of endangered animals, following legal changes.

An amendment to the Endangered Species Ordinance will extend protection to ingredients in medicines from Wednesday.

Cat-head smuggler held

Six cat heads and six dead pangolins were confiscated by the Customs and Excise Department at Lowu. The items - worth an estimated $2,470 - were being carried in a plastic bag by a 43-year-old woman coming into Hong Kong. A Customs spokeswoman said the case of smuggled cat heads 'was strange and unusual'.

Pair guilty over turtle heads

Two mainlanders have been given a suspended jail sentence for importing stuffed sea turtle heads and pangolin scales into Hong Kong.

At Eastern Court yesterday, sailors Zhang Jingdui and Hai Jianguo, both 50, pleaded guilty to charges of importing a highly endangered species and a scheduled species into the SAR.
