This week we test: perfume

Never underestimate the power of scent as a way to show your persona. Pick a lighter scent with woody notes for daytime and more intense ones with citrus and floral notes for evenings

Nicky Hilton

Most celebrities-turned-designers aspire to be the next British Fashion Award-winning Victoria Beckham rather than Lindsay Lohan for Emanuel Ungaro, but Nicky Hilton scoffs at any suggestion that she is part of the celebrity designer pack.

No place like home

Five of my friends moved back to Hong Kong recently. They're all in their late 20s to early 30s and had left for various cities around the world, but not to study or work or anything sensible like that. No, they were just disillusioned with what Hong Kong had to offer. They felt they could find a sense of purpose and their true calling in London, Tokyo, Sydney, or wherever.

This week we test: celebrity scents

Celebrities and fashion designers are churning out fragrances. Choose one that reflects your personality and stands out from the crowd.

Paris Hilton Can Can (HK$550/100ml)

A very sweet, strong scent, dominated by notes of vanilla. Perfect for a long day out and lasts well into the night.

La Perla J'aime (HK$400/30ml)

Moral outrage misdirected in celebrity internet photo saga

The Hong Kong government and legislators seem confused about what action to take over the recent spate of compromising pictures, purportedly of local celebrities. I am surprised at the shock these pictures have caused, especially as such images of stars are not uncommon in Asia.

Hollywood West

With only a week to go before the end of the year, celebrities who aren't too busy berating their personal assistants, having chronic meltdowns and faking their disdain of fame are most likely compiling their resolutions for 2008.

There's a reason why Ellen DeGeneres is an Emmy-winning talk show host: she's funny, kind and authentic. All of which may or may not have served her during the latest celebrity saga swirling through Hollywood, involving DeGeneres, a dog, and a drama.

For a few hundred folks in town who are perceived to have, aspire to, or who have inherited, a certain high social status, autumn is a busy time of the year. It's when all the luxury brands kick-start their most lucrative sales season with fancy cocktail parties to launch new product lines and merchandise.

Under normal circumstances, and in most parts of the civilised world, a jailbird with a drinking problem, who's also struggling with anorexia and has a self-confessed attraction to recreational drugs might not be viewed as a prime candidate for motherhood.

But Hollywood, as everyone knows, hardly provides normal circumstances.

What is it?

It's one of the world's most expensive fragrances, with a price tag of HK$45,000 for a 50ml crystal bottle. There are only 500 bottles available of the limited-edition fragrance, and Hong Kong has four. Each numbered bottle is elegantly packed in a solid birch box, with bird's eye veneer and leather lining.

Who are the creators?

Hollywood West

As Tinseltown inches into summer, the cineplexes are filled with threequels (Shrek, Pirates, Spiderman, Ocean's) and the small screen is overflowing with repeats, the celebrities who have had an eventful year seem to be retreating into the shadows to lick their wounds.

23 Jun 2007 - 12:00am

The whole Paris Hilton farce has been thoroughly entertaining, even on this side of the Pacific. The combination of a spoiled, self-centred celebrity and her legal transgression is a winning recipe for some rich schadenfreude. I'm not here to discuss only Hilton, or just how she got herself into jail, however.

So the triumvirate of Hollywood bubbleheads - Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears - seem to have achieved the impossible: they've gone from bad enough to worse than ever.
