Playtime 'nurtures'

Cuts in playtime for children at a Lantau school will hold back their personal and social development, says a behavioural health researcher.

The Link management will spend HK$25 million on renovating 150 recreational facilities in public estates.

The renovation, which started in September, was expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year, according to David Chan Tsan-fai, general manager of The Link's facilities and contract management department.

It's not all fun and games with grants for school playgrounds

It was supposed to be a moment of rare joy for those controlling the provincial government's purse strings - the distribution of funds to build school playgrounds in British Columbia. But the process has instead descended into a mire of anger, guilt and recrimination.

sticking point

Children and parents alike will fall in love with The Pedagogs, 'refreshingly good educational tools' designed to motivate young learners in the classroom and at home.

Country parks are refuges in the city whose future will depend on their distinctive character being retained, a senior outgoing conservation official said, announcing a series of activities to celebrate three decades of country parks.

Grass is greener

Running barefoot on the grass, beads of early morning dew sticking to your toes; so cool and fresh beneath your feet. Not a sensation we residents of Tokyo enjoy often. If ever.

City officials have now realised that there may be advantages to getting the public closer to nature, and have devised a plan to turf all the city's school playgrounds over the next decade.

Shoot the messenger - the Hong Kong solution to school violence

I am a gweilo teacher and usually I feel I'm given sufficient credibility by my colleagues. But sometimes an incident occurs that reminds me not to take this for granted. One Friday I was on playground duty. Our students had kicked a ball over the high fence dividing our school from one next door. A barrage of bottles, cans and rubbish came back.

Play crucial to development

Advocating a child's right to play has always been the mission of Playright, so we would like to respond to the story headlined 'Private sector sites 'bias' a primary worry' (Education Post, June 1) regarding the limited play spaces for existing schools with cramped campuses.

Conditions at popular playground appalling

On two occasions this month a snake has been spotted in the very busy children's playground in Stanley next to the bus terminal.

The general conditions at this playground are appalling.

The empty lot next to it is a breeding ground for rats, mosquitoes and, now, it seems, snakes.

Playground problems solved

I refer to A. Chan's letter concerning the delay in the replacement of safety matting in Cloud View Road Service Reservoir Playground and Braemar Hill Road Playground (South China Morning Post, March 8).

The replacement of safety matting in the Urban Council children's playgrounds is an annual exercise to upgrade the council's facilities.

Public paying price for gross incompetence

One day in August last year, the Cloud View Road Reservoir playground was cordoned off without any prior notice.

The ground was dug up and all safety mats were removed within a couple of days. It was apparent then that the Urban Council was going to replace all the safety mats in the playground.

Time to swing into action

I was excited on noticing the construction of three new children's playground areas in Lai Chi Kok Park.

Many people watched workers lay the surface and on completion we began to count the days until it would open, hoping perhaps it would be ready before Lunar New Year so children could play there over the holiday period.

Council's reasoning irrational

On Tin Kwong Road, there is a huge grass football pitch managed by the Urban Council and next to it there is a nice little playground equipped with swing sets, a seesaw and the like. These facilities are a refreshing delight in the middle of our crowded city, however very surprisingly, they are locked up more often than not.
