Parliament presence a sign of Prince Charles' rising status

Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, attended the state opening of Britain's parliament alongside Queen Elizabeth yesterday, in a sign of the heir to the throne's increasing role as the 87-year-old monarch scales back her duties.

Bhutan elects parliament for second time in its history

The tiny Himalayan country of Bhutan begins electing a new parliament today for only the second time in its history, five years after the Buddhist monarchy gave up its absolute power. Voters will today choose members of the upper house National Council, a non-party body, then in the following weeks will decide which of five parties will form the next government in the National Assembly.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak dissolved parliament on Wednesday in preparation for a general election seen as the toughest challenge yet for the ruling coalition after 56 years in power.
