The strategically hip

With more than 400 hotels and locations in just about every major city, the Marriott chain is hardly renowned for taking a boutique approach to accommodation. But the recent revamp of its Renaissance brand is part of its strategy to break into this growing sector.

Couple lose valuables in Phuket hotel safe theft

Christmas dinner cost a holidaying Hong Kong couple more than they bargained for when they returned to their Phuket hotel room to find goods worth US$20,000 missing from their safe.

Tamara Robins, 28, and Derryn Ruolle, 29, returned to their room at the four-star Manathai hotel at Surin beach on the Thai island's west coast to find the door ajar and the safe open.

'We cancelled our trip after the tsunami and went to Australia instead. This is our first time back to Phuket after the disaster. We have told our children to run, run, run if they hear a tsunami warning. We lived in Bangkok from 1998 to 2001, then came to Hong Kong. I would consider buying a villa in Phuket, but properties there are over-priced.

From beaches to nightlife, Phuket has something for everyone

PHUKET, THAILAND'S largest island (930 sqkm), about the size of Singapore, is one of the most visited destinations by Hong Kong travellers.

New York

The city is a mecca for shopaholics such as me. My favourite area to shop is SoHo [south of Houston Street;] where many antique stores and brand-name boutiques are located. I've also bought lots of funky home accessories there.

Indonesian turmoil helps Thailand buck falling tourist trend

SPURRED on by a weakened currency, the Indonesian crisis and cheap flights and package deals from Western countries, Thailand is bucking the trend of dwindling tourist numbers throughout the region.

International tourist destination Phuket has just come off the back of its most successful November-April high season on record.

Paradise in Phuket

THERE are few sweeter sounds than the closing of doors: the door of the office closing behind you at midday on a Friday, the door on Thai International's 2.30pm to Phuket, and the door to the seaview suite at 6pm.

Add to the symphony the clink from the mini-bar, the sizzle of the sauna and laughter from the Pink Elephant Pub.

Fantasy islands

THERE is a lot of debate over whether Hong Kong is a colony, a territory or a city. I say save your breath and blow your credit rating - the correct experience of Hong Kong is of a blandly upholstered airport hotel.

On the trail of a lost paradise

THERE was a Thai friend, born and bred in Phuket, who once told me a story on how some of his friends got rich.

It was family tradition that the sons of land owners were given plots of land by their fathers once they married, or inherited them when their fathers died.
