I've been searching the markets for apricots, one of my favourite fruits, since mid-spring. More than once I've been fooled by the sight of the loquat, which has the same colour but a very different taste and texture.

Does an apple a day keep the doctor away?

The humble apple certainly does contain a variety of nutrients that do grant health benefits. Here's the lowdown:

Fibre: A medium-sized apple contains about four grams of soluble and insoluble fibre. Whilst insoluble fibre can help keep your gut healthy and lower your risk of colon cancer, soluble fibre, such as pectin, can help to lower 'bad' blood cholesterol levels.

Power to the pipa

The loquat is sometimes called the pipa fruit because its shape is said to resemble the body of the four-stringed instrument. Although it's a beautiful apricot colour, the loquat is not always the most enticing of fruit - they do not ripen after being plucked from the tree, so if this is done too early (as it usually is because they bruise easily), the flavour will be mouth-puckering.

AFTER the Lunar New Year festivities, harvest the delicious kut (small, round oranges) or kumquat (small, long ones) fruit for marmalade. If you haven't enough, even after poaching from friends and neighbours, make up the weight with thin-skinned oranges or lemons.
