HK hotels raise the bar

Hong Kong is home to 193 hotels with a total of 63,183 rooms. But with 22.32 million overnight visitors - or 53 per cent of total visitors - a year, hotel rooms are still in high demand. As competition has intensified, hotels of all classes have to constantly upgrade their facilities to attract more business.

For Hong Kong yummy mummies, and some severely fashionable tots, Seed will be an all-too familiar name. Seed Heritage, on the other hand, may not be.

The childrenswear and womenswear collections of the Australian brand are combined under that name, in the comfortable surrounds of stores in Queen's Road Central and The Peninsula hotel, both of which opened in January.

Peninsula moves the furniture to celebrate a more genteel Hong Kong

For its 80th anniversary, the Peninsula Hotel is bringing back some of its traditions.

On Sunday the furniture was cleared from the lobby to revive the Sunday afternoon tea dances held at the hotel during colonial times, bringing a sense of genteel nostalgia in a refined setting.

Peak performance

The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels said its flagship hotel, The Peninsula in Tsim Sha Tsui, registered its best performance since 1997 in the first half of this year. Booming global travel and a one-off gain of $1.17 billion from the sale of the Kowloon Hotel boosted the luxury hotelier's interim net profit to $1.26 billion, from $127 million in the same period last year.

HK's Peninsula ranked world's 27th best hotel

Updated at 7.01pm: Hong Kong's Peninsula Hotel was ranked the 27th best hotel in the world and the 10th in Asia, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Chinese-language news daily Ming Pao reported a survey by US magazine Travel and Leisure. Readers ranked the Peninsula Hotel 27th among the world's 100 best hotels this year.

Peninsula Hotel artist calls time on his day job

Law Bun has more time for his beloved painting these days. After 31 years as a room attendant at the Peninsula Hotel, he retired on Sunday after turning 60.

But the artist will not be forgotten at the Peninsula. In the hotel's Spring Moon restaurant, guests dine off china he hand-painted.

Hi-tech hotel: Mongkok will get its first five-star hotel in July. The Langham Place Hotel says it will be the most technologically advanced hotel in Asia Pacific.
