Room rates, occupancy slip at Peninsula hotels

Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, operator of the Peninsula luxury hotels, has felt the effects of the global economic downturn, swine flu and unrest in Thailand - all of which shaved the average yield on its nine-hotel portfolio by 29 per cent in the first quarter.

Everbright in Palace coup as PLA exits

The People's Liberation Army yesterday formally transferred to China Everbright Group its controlling share in one of Beijing's best-known hotels, the Palace.

In one of the most visible signs of the military's withdrawal from business, officers of the PLA's general staff handed over its 60 per cent stake to Everbright officials at a ceremony at the 530-room five-star hotel.

Peninsula plans to double chain

THE Peninsula group aims to expand to no more than 10 or 12 hotels from its existing base of six, according to group president Onno Poortier.

His statement on the ultimate size of the prestige group came as Mr Poortier and a team of general managers from the hotels met London reporters during a tour of Europe.

Hotels chief leaving HK

HONGKONG and Shanghai Hotels has no immediate plans to replace its managing director, Mr Hanmer Webb-Peploe, who retires at the end of this month.

The Peninsula Group director of public relations, Ms Lynn Grebstad, said there were no plans at the moment to fill the position.

Mr Webb-Peploe's five-year contract ends this month.
