A Nanjing teenager's act of vandalism - he scratched the words "Ding Jinhao was here" in Chinese characters on a 35-century-old sculpture - struck a raw nerve in a in a country so proud of its ancient civilisation. And, embarrassingly, it followed an astonishing attack by the Communist Party mouthpiece that labelled Americans untrustworthy and lacking in integrity.

China has dismissed a diplomatic protest by Japan over a commentary in a state-run publication that challenged Tokyo's ownership of Okinawa, home to major US bases. The latest angry exchange could further strain tense relations between Asia's two largest economies, which are involved in a stand-off over a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, called the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyus in China.

The shape of the new headquarters of the People's Daily, the Communist Party's main propaganda machine, has sparked heated discussion online for looking a bit too phallic.

The building is still under construction in Beijing, but at its current stage, documented widely in pictures on social media sites, its shape is certainly suggestive.
