Dell looks beyond the big Chinese cities for PC push

Dell, one of the top names in personal computers, is planning an aggressive expansion in smaller Chinese cities as the market grows despite a global trend toward smaller devices, Dell's computing products vice-president Kirk Schell said.

Lenovo, which posted record-high annual revenue and net income for the year ending March 31, said it expects the slumping global personal computer industry will rebound in the second half of this year and help boost the company's profitability.

Computer shipments forecast to increase 15.4pc

Worldwide computer shipments will rise more than previously estimated, driven by demand for ultra-low-cost and portable models, according to researcher IDC.

Shipments would climb 15.4 per cent this year, higher than a March estimate of 12.8 per cent, said IDC.

Asus Eee, a newly released personal computer co-designed by semiconductor giant Intel and Taiwanese manufacturer AsusTek Computer, has a unique name. It stands for 'Easy to learn, work and play; Excellent internet experience and Excellent on the go' - a somewhat awkward designation of the low-cost sub-notebook as a consumer-friendly device.

Katsutani Takuji, Japanese electronics giant NEC's top designer, has put his stamp on a new premium notebook personal computer, the Versa E6310. The slim laptop has an NEC mirror logo on its leather-like cover and a chrome, blue-lit touch pad. It features media-player controls and users can access documents and spreadsheets, and perform file-search functions via the touch pad.
