With compulsory retirement seven-race meetings away for Peter Ng Bik-kuen, the trainer joked that he might have only just reached his peak after an upset double gave him a career-best for winners in a season.

Shower proves refreshing as gelding finally makes the breakthrough

A brief but heavy shower early in proceedings was getting most of the credit from trainer Peter Ng Bik-kuen for Taknam's long-shot breakthrough victory in the Gascoigne Handicap (1,600m). 'He's had fetlock problems and missed over a year of racing and the difference today was just that little bit of give in the track,' Ng said.

Gold Racer followed his impressive debut show with a win at his second start, continuing the strong season for trainer Peter Ng Bik-kuen, whose patience has made the difference with the four-year-old. Ng, who has 15 wins this term, purchased Gold Racer at a New Zealand breeze-up sale two years ago, but has waited until this season to unleash the powerful-looking gelding.

It was a list of firsts for four-year-old Excellent Win as he continued Peter Ng Bik-kuen's sizzling start to the season in the first race and the trainer himself reduced the result to its basics. 'He got a class drop in the handicaps and I got him fit - simple as that,' said Ng, who moved into double figures for a season just two months old.
