Get the Look: monochrome

After a summer of colour blocking, designers are going back to basics with a black-and-white palette for autumn. It's a fail-safe combination. Last spring, Stella McCartney created a bestseller with her black-and-white slimming dresses, and this season Phillip Lim used the contrast to create new effects such as shadowing and trompe-l'oeil on his fitted dresses and sweaters.

Tribal pursuit

Parisian designer Shourouk Rhaiem is all about excess and we love her over-the-top jewellery collection, especially the tribal-themed Mumba Devi necklace (left; HK$11,000) and the Nova headpiece (above; HK$5,500). Shourouk Rhaiem is available at Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3968 2668.

Phillip Lim skips Paris to launch multi-city video project in HK

New York-based fashion designer Phillip Lim (pictured left) loves Hong Kong so much that he shunned Paris Fashion Week to party here.

'I skipped Paris and came straight to Hong Kong,' said the fashion golden boy behind the brand 3.1 Phillip Lim. 'I think it's important to be here because I'm Chinese. I feel so connected to my roots when I'm here.'

Diaspora diaries

As a child, Phillip Lim became used to the hum of his mother's sewing machine, as she made garments at home for piece-rate wages. The Lims, the father from Hunan province, mother from Guangzhou, emigrated to California via Thailand (where Phillip was born) and the parents took whatever work was available to support their five children.

Stick your neck out

Forget bags, a statement necklace is what you want for autumn. Our favourites:

Phillip Lim's extra-long, multiple-strand gold chain necklace decorated with coloured resin discs.

Lanvin's to-die-for chunky pieces (above left) made from heavy metal, locks and crystals - part-industrial, part-glam.
