Shaoguan, (better known to Cantonese speakers as Shiu Kwan), lies at the confluence of the Wu and Zhen rivers. These join to make the Pak Ho ('North River'), which flows south 221 kilometres to Guangzhou.

Guangshen Railway buys line from parent

Hong Kong-listed Guangshen Railway, the largest railway operator in the southern mainland, has completed its 10.14 billion yuan purchase of assets from its parent, Guangzhou Railway Group.

Shares in the Guangshen company gained 1.97 per cent to close at HK$6.22 yesterday after the announcement. They hit as high as HK$6.33 in morning trade.

Railway firm aims to raise 10b yuan

Mainland rail operator Guangshen Railway plans to tap the market for 10 billion yuan when it launches its A-share listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in the fourth quarter of this year, according to market sources.

'The company expects to raise the money to finance its expansion plans, but the details have not yet been announced,' a source said.
