Altaya wine importers will hold a 'passion for pinot' tasting and dinner on Saturday at the W Hotel in Kowloon. The event - led by master of wine Debra Meiburg with guests from wineries that include Domaine Faiveley, Domaine Vincent Girardin and Mahi - costs HK$1,080. The tasting of 12 pinot noirs will be followed by an eight-course Chinese dinner.

Laying down the law on wine pairing

Arriving in Hong Kong in 1987, with little more than a master's in law and two suitcases, David Hall-Jones is the managing partner of a US law firm's Asian offices. He loves wine so much, he's a hands-on owner of a vineyard in Central Otago, New Zealand, and owns a property in the Burgundy region of France. He loves pinot noir and pairing it with his other passion, food.

Wine ratings

Fans of AC/DC may be interested to hear that the band's wines are now available here. The wines are made in collaboration with winery Warburn Estate and are named after their hits - Hell's Bells Sauvignon Blanc, Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon and Back in Black Shiraz. Kiss, Madonna, Cliff Richard and Slayer are other artists with their own brands.

Inaki Aizpitarte of Le Chateaubriand in Paris is cooking tomorrow night at the Agnes B Le Pain Grille at Cubus in Causeway Bay. The chef, whose innovative gastro-bistro in Paris ranked 9th on the 2011 San Pellegrino list of 50 best restaurants, is cooking a menu that includes white asparagus with shellfish, sorrel and parmesan; and pigeon four-ways with chips, rhubarb, herbs and tamarind.

I sat sipping a glass of unidentified red wine and staring at a copy of the painting Amitie (right) by Chen Yifei one evening early this month. Although the painting, which sold last year at Sotheby's for more than HK$17.5 million, was shown from a projector, the intimate moment that it captured - between two women wearing cheongsams - was moving.
