PIZZA IS BELIEVED TO have originated in Naples in the late 18th century. But what we find in Hong Kong today – cheese-filled crusts and toppings of imitation crab, pineapple and Thousand Island dressing – are proof that we are a few centuries (and 9,000 kilometres) away from the original.

World's best fast food found at London Boy Scout hut

A restaurant in a former Scout hut in east London serves a pizza that is the most delicious fast food item in the world, according to voters in the Chowzter Fast Feast awards. Story Deli took the top prize as well as the pizza award for its margherita, made with organic flour, rolled thin and baked for 30 seconds.

I found a trio of interesting truffle products while shopping in City'super (Times Square, tel: 2506 2888). The Campanis tartufella buffalo milk mozzarella's greyish cast and dark specks come from the black truffle.

Cutting the cord

When I was child, I was jealous of those school children who had string cheese in their lunch box. It was fascinating to watch them pull the cheese into noodle- like strands before eating it. When I finally had the chance to taste it, I found it disappointingly bland.

Dough it yourself

Making perfect pizza dough is my latest obsession. The recipes I used to use were fine for when I was baking pizzas in the oven, but not with my latest purchase: a machine that reaches 470 degrees Celsius and cooks a pizza in less than five minutes, compared with 10 or more before.
