A drug addict who attacked four strangers in a two-day chopping spree in Tseung Kwan O last year was jailed for five years yesterday.

Rate cuts see secondary sales rebound strongly

Sales of homes in the secondary market rebounded strongly last week, buoyed by an improvement in buyer sentiment after interest rate cuts on the mainland and in Europe.

A total of 187 sales were recorded for the week ended July 8 in the largest 50 private housing estates tracked by Ricacorp Properties, a 43 per cent rise from 131 deals the previous week.

SHKP picks up Tseung Kwan O site for HK$1.03b

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) has bought a residential site in Tseung Kwan O for HK$1.033 billion, its first acquisition since the arrest of the company's joint chairmen on suspicion of corruption in March.

SHKP executive director Victor Lui said the total investment, inclusive of the land cost, would be HK$2.5 billion.

Crooked tycoon declared bankrupt

Disgraced property tycoon George Tan Soon-gin was declared bankrupt in the Court of First Instance yesterday after he failed to pay a debt of more than HK$60 million to his long-time foe, Rogerio Lam Sou-fung.

The debt arose from a legal fight in which Tan (pictured) was found to have sold precious Chinese porcelain borrowed from Lam in 1982.

Man arrested over series of stabbing attacks

A man was arrested last night after a series of stabbing attacks on pedestrians in Tseung Kwan O last week.

The 31-year-old was arrested at 10.25pm in a flat in Tak Chak House on the Hau Tak Estate, where one of the attacks took place, then taken to Tseung Kwan O Police Station and held for questioning.

Man, 81, fights back

An 81-year-old man fought off a gang of teenagers who tried to rob him in Tseung Kwan O on Sunday.

Police arrested eight teenagers, aged between 15 and 19, after the attack. Several had cuts and minor injuries from fighting the elderly man.

The attack led to calls for a police crackdown on gangs in Tseung Kwan O, where youth crime is on the rise.

Housing estates plunged into darkness

A suspected technical fault at a China Light and Power substation triggered a fire and cut the power supply to several estates in Tseung Kwan O last night for up to 45 minutes. The fire in Po Lam Lane affected estates including Metro City, Verbena Heights, the Pinnacle, Well On Garden, Po Lam and Tsui Lam. Calls for assistance were received from residents stranded in stopped lifts.

New beds, new buildings at hospitals

Tseung Kwan O Hospital will offer up to 72 new beds in 2013 as it launches obstetric services amid growing demand in Kowloon East, hospital chief Tom Kam-tim said yesterday. More midwives and neo-natal intensive care unit nurses would be trained to prepare for that, he said.
