Town planners to impose controls on Po Toi Island developments

The Town Planning Board upheld its decision to impose controls on any development on Po Toi Island yesterday, but now faces a legal challenge from developers who are building a memorial garden there.

HK$1.2m in computer goods seized

Marine police seized 162 boxes of smuggled computer hard disks and notebooks worth HK$1.2 million in an operation off Southern District at 11pm on Saturday. Officers spotted about 10 men unloading boxes from a light-goods vehicle into two speedboats. The group fled on the boats when the police moved in, but officers lost sight of them in waters near Po Toi Island.

Terrapins seized

Four Hong Kong crewmen and eight mainlanders were arrested after the seizure of 18,000 contraband terrapins on two fishing boats off Po Toi Island.

Sailor hurt

A 49-YEAR-OLD crewman hit by rope on a Panamanian-registered ship moored off Po Toi island at 4.30 am has suffered injuries to his chest, neck and hands. He was taken to hospital by Marine Police launch.

A BRITISH-MADE cannon shell believed to be more than 100 years old was found by a dredger off Po Toi Island.

Shots fired at cargo ship

A CARGO vessel said it was fired on by a speedboat off Po Toi Island early yesterday. Marine Police received a message from the vessel, which said it was two miles northwest of the island and outside Hongkong waters, asking for help at 6.17 am.

Suspected smugglers fished out of water

THREE suspected smugglers from the mainland were pulled from the sea yesterday when their high-powered speedboat caught fire while being chased by one of the newly-delivered marine police launches south of Po Toi Island.

The speedboat later capsized, dropping a new left-hand drive Mercedes-Benz into the sea.

Another Viet boat boarded

ANOTHER Vietnamese cargo vessel was reported to have been intercepted by armed Public Security Bureau officers south of Po Toi Island last night.

The master of the Vietnam-registered Vietxo 01 radioed the Marine Department's vessel traffic centre at 8 pm, saying his vessel was being ''caught by Chinese policemen''.
