Russian scientists believe they have found a new type of bacteria in the subglacial Lake Vostok in Antarctica. The samples obtained from the underground lake in May last year contained a bacteria, which bore no resemblance to existing types, said Sergei Bulat of the Saint Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics.

'Hot' Polar Bears power to victory

Perseverance paid off for the Polar Bear canoe polo team on Sunday when they finally won the boys' Winter Canoe Polo Open Championships. They had finished third in 2010 and runners-up last year in the competition organised by the Hong Kong Canoe Union.

Bear essentials

When you look directly over the railing of your cruise ship into the piercing black eyes of a polar bear, it suddenly doesn't matter that the cruise has no chocolate buffet or that the swimming pool is used as storage space. The bear doesn't care about chocolate buffets either; it would rather the ship moved on so it can get back to hunting ringed seal.
