Training pays off for elite officers

While Hongkongers sit back to enjoy Christmas and the new year, the elite Police Tactical Unit is kicking into full gear to ensure we are safe and sound over the holidays.

Nearly 600 officers took part in a half-day of fun and games, where training exercises were transformed into comedic muscle games to raise money for Operation Santa Claus.

An officer from the Police Tactical Unit was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital after being attacked when police closed a traffic lane during yesterday's march.

A police spokeswoman said the officer fell to ground while he was on duty near Thomson and Fleming roads.

Three officers collapse in heat during anti-riot drill

Three Police Tactical Unit (PTU) officers collapsed in the heat during an anti-riot exercise yesterday.

The three men were drilling with 38 other officers at the PTU headquarters in Fanling.

The women officers taking part completed both the morning and afternoon training sessions.

Constable collapses after test run for special duties

A policeman fainted shortly after completing an endurance run on the first day of a three-day Airport Special Duties Unit selection process yesterday.

Another constable, Cheung Chi-ming, 24, twisted a leg.

Constable Ng Man-ho, 24, attached to Waterfront police station, collapsed after completing the course at the Police Training School in Wong Chuk Hang.

POLICE officers are deliberately failing medical exams to avoid being drafted into the Police Tactical Unit (PTU), sources have revealed.

Medical screening for officers selected for the PTU is now under review after hundreds of officers failed fitness tests.

Police relax training programme

PHYSICAL training at the Police Tactical Unit has been scaled back following the death of a superintendent and several collapses and injuries, according to trainees.

The force began a review of its training programme after Superintendent Wong Wing-kei, 39, collapsed and died of a suspected heart attack during a team-building session on February 21.

Police rookie laid low by fitness test

A woman police recruit collapsed after completing a two-hour fitness test yesterday, days after an officer dropped dead following training.

Wong Wai-han, 20, who is four weeks from the end of her 27-week course at the Police Training School in Wong Chuk Hang, regained consciousness before an ambulance arrived.
