Diaoyu protesters cannot be allowed to hijack foreign policy

After a group of activists who sailed from Hong Kong to the Diaoyu Islands was detained by Japan on August 15, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman issued a protest, calling the detentions "a gross violation of China's territorial sovereignty". Japan, too, lodged a protest.

Dispute will not be resolved in near future

It seems that China is trying its best to press its claim that the Diaoyu Islands are part of its territory.

This was why a group of Hong Kong citizens sailed to the islands earlier this month. I would like to express my opinion about the Diaoyu Islands dispute.

China will prevail in Diaoyus dispute

The Chinese in Hong Kong, like those on the mainland and overseas, are all supportive of China's sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.

Tangled past of the Diaoyus/Senkakus

The Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, just like the Dokdo/Takeshima ones disputed between Japan and Korea, are just barren rocks of no obvious value. But they are just the visible part of icebergs of history.

Asia must resist pull of nationalism

The recent visits - or invasions - depending on your point of view, by small groups of hot-headed but well-organised nationalists to isolated rocky islands shows just how intractable are questions of territorial rights in the seas around China.

China trying to correct past wrongs

I was fascinated by Richard Paine's arguments regarding the Diaoyu Islands ("Islands are part of Okinawa", August 21).

I am sure peace-loving people all over the world know the true facts behind this disputed territory.

The islands are an integral part of Yilan county, Taiwan, and are far closer to the island than to Okinawa.

In recent days, public protests erupted in Chinese cities, with demonstrators demanding that the Japanese government return the Diaoyu Islands to China. These protests have also put a lot of pressure on the Chinese government to take a tougher stance against Japan.

Beijing warns US-Japan military drills will stoke tensions amid dispute

Beijing called on Washington to stop "stoking tension" over the disputed Diaoyu Islands yesterday as the US and Japan began a month-long military drill.

Japanese officials stressed that the drill was a routine exercise, but mainland media suggested it was aimed at containing China in the wake of recent disputes over the eight uninhabited islets, known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan.

According to existing law, a bilateral agreement between two countries on sovereignty issues is upheld under international law.
