Rap and ruin: The Great Gatsby

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby.

Jay-Z on the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby, the 3-D film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel of obsessive love and American social divisions? Surely, that's an all-too-obvious attempt to make a period story appeal to younger cinema-goers?

'Omnishambles' Oxford University Press Word of the Year

Britain's media is in meltdown and its government is gaffe-prone, so Oxford Dictionaries has chosen an apt Word of the Year: "omnishambles".

Oxford University Press has crowned the word - defined as "a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterised by a string of blunders and miscalculations" - its top term of 2012.

We've got the look

Much like their hairstyles, outfits, stage sets and guitar riffs, Japanese rockers L'Arc en Ciel's celebration of their 20th anniversary will be big. So big, in fact, that it will last two years - and encompass their 21st birthday as well.

Well-worn label is more ironic than iconic

'Fashion icon' is possibly the most overused term in our industry, at least that I can think of. It's de rigueur these days for brands to describe any z-lister they've paid to attend a promotional event as a 'fashion icon'. It is as common as the flat champagne that's always served at these things.

Young people often lack good manners

Last week, when I was commenting on one of my friends' observation, a schoolmate suddenly yelled at me from behind my back. She said she didn't like what I'd just said. She was so rude I was shocked. Many others were also speechless.

Illustration artist Lun Wong (aka 1KStyles) was supposed to launch his first exhibition, Pop Attack!, a week ago at Club M1NT. However, he was under another kind of attack. 'I came down with swine flu. I just thought I had the regular flu. I was working my butt off and went to the hospital one day because I just felt really tired.

Crying shame

There was a fellow who once quipped that 'being punctual is a question of guessing how late the other chap is going to be'. Personally, I hate being late, which is why, last week, I was sat in a grand hotel's expensive cafe waiting for a tardy acquaintance to arrive. Normally, this would have been a chance to relax or read.

After weeks, months and years of anticipation, the Beijing Olympics are finally upon us. No more countdowns in the MTR, no more daily torch relay updates, no minute-long TV specials like the Beijing Dream, highlights of athletes past and present, or documentaries on the architectural wonder of the Ice Cube and the Bird's Nest.
