Strong support for no-take marine zones

An opinion poll shows 80 per cent of residents want at least one-fifth of the city's marine areas designated as no-take zones. Reclamation, dumping and overfishing are the most damaging activities to the marine environment, they say.

Sharks search

Two suspected sharks were spotted off the coast of Sai Kung but a marine police and helicopter search failed to find any trace of them. A caller reported to have seen two big fish that looked like sharks in Port Shelter about 100 metres offshore at 3pm.

Red tide surfaces

There were four sightings of red tide this week but no fish culture zones or beaches were hit. Affected areas in Tai Long Sai Wan, Pak Lap, Port Shelter and Clear Water Bay in Sai Kung were quickly dispersed.

TV sets seized

A ROYAL Navy ship on anti-smuggling patrol off Sai Kung last night intercepted a high-powered speedboat and seized 55 television sets worth $150,000. The four-engined tai fei was spotted by a Government Flying Service helicopter near Port Shelter. A police spokesman said five crew jumped overboard and fled.

Pair arrested

TWO crew members aboard a speedboat were injured when they jumped overboard in an attempt to evade arrest by the Navy in Port Shelter, Sai Kung, last night. The two were pulled from the water and arrested.
