POSSUM Bourne came to the territory on the crest of a wave and rode it all the way to Beijing last year as he swept to victory in both the 555 Hong Kong to Beijing Rally and the Asia-Pacific Championship.

Fleet on spying mission

AN international fleet of around 40 cars embarked on a key reconnaissance mission yesterday for next month's 555 Hong Kong-Beijing Rally.

Among those participating in the recee were last year's respective winner and second place holder, Possum Bourne and Richard Burns, who have built up a friendly rivalry in preparation for the gruelling event.

Possum takes title after early scare

POSSUM Bourne had the scare of his life yesterday when his Subaru Impreza refused to start at the beginning of the penultimate stage of 555 Hong Kong-Beijing rally.

Lined up at Badaling, 50 kilometres west of Beijing, for the Great Wall stage of the week-long event, Bourne attempted to start his 350 horsepower turbo-charged rally car - but to no avail.

Possum scents second title

POSSUM Bourne has only a waiting game to play before he can win the 555 Hong Kong-Beijing Rally and the 1994 Asia Pacific Rally Championship. Just 13 time-stage kilometres near the Great Wall separate the New Zealander from his second title and his first win in the rally marathon.

Vatanen narrows gap on leaders

SUBARU Legacy cars hold the top three places at the end of 10 stages of the 555 Hong Kong to Beijing Rally yesterday with Finn Ari Vatanen the big mover.

Slowed by fuel pump problems on Sunday and relegated to fifth place, the former world champion moved two places up the ladder as the rally headed through Hunan Province.
