Slow start for junk mail fight

A Hongkong Post service to help combat junk mail has got off to a slow start, with less than 1 per cent of homes and businesses signing up.

Environmental group Green Sense has accused Hongkong Post of a lack of sincerity in promoting the 'No Circular Mail' service because it could affect the post office's revenue.

Finding the secrets of 'Letter Utopia'

One way to stop some of that junk mail

If you can't stand junk mail any more, you will soon be able to tell Hongkong Post where to stick it.

Starting from September 1, residents will be able to exclude certain unaddressed circulars, by putting a sticker on their letter box.

Another long catalogue of waste - Post offices

The Director of Audit has called for the closure of some post offices after it found 97 of the 125 post offices are making a loss.

The director also urged Hongkong Post to set up a system to detect and deter underpayment of postage, since the commission found nearly 40 per cent of 1,299 mail items in a random check in January had been underpaid.

Destroyed letters found among mail recovered after robbery

More than 20 letters among the 1,200 items stolen in Monday's mail robbery have been found opened and torn to pieces, Hongkong Post said yesterday.

The mail destroyed after Monday's robbery included promotional letters addressed to various recipients in Po Tat Estate and Sau Mau Ping Estate, in Kwun Tong, from a variety of senders, a police officer said.

Contract postal staff may strike over call to work Boxing Day

Contract postal staff are considering staging a strike during the Christmas holidays, after Hongkong Post requested that staff at the Air Mail Centre work on Boxing Day to clear accumulated mail.

About a third, or 2,200, of postmen and women are contract staff, their responsibilities including sorting letters and customer service at counters.
