Taiwan's UN postmarks 'will be rejected'

Beijing hit back yesterday at Taipei's move to stamp mail with a postmark supporting the island's bid to join the United Nations, saying it would reject any letter or package bearing it.

As a result, Taiwan Post apparently retreated from the scheme, saying that starting tomorrow, mail would bear the postmark only at the customer's request.

Stamp speculators cash in on great date

Stamps issued on the first day of the SAR were changing hands for more than 10 times their value after post offices closed yesterday.

Hawkers outside the General Post Office were selling commemorative envelopes bearing stamps and July 1, 1997 postmarks for up to $40 - compared with their face value of $2.30 to $3.60.

$17m Post Office update scheme
