519 medical errors listed

A total of 519 medical blunders, including one in which a patient died, were recorded in the first six months of last year, health chiefs said yesterday.

They involved medical staff giving incorrect dosages, labelling drugs incorrectly and attempting to give patients the wrong medicine.

Rules failed to prevent medical error

A nurse who injected a baby with potassium chloride, slowing his heart to dangerous levels, did so despite new rules which should have prevented the accident.

Princess Margaret Hospital had taken 'immediate action' aimed at preventing a potassium chloride overdose when the incident occurred last week, a Hospital Authority spokesman said.

Mills will remove additive from flour

FLOUR mills will stop using potassium bromate as an additive from next month after an international research found that it might cause cancer.

The decision was made during a meeting between Director of Health, Dr Lee Shiu-hung, and representatives from the industry yesterday.
