MADRID - A major power outage hit Barcelona, snarling traffic, hobbling public transport and knocking out electricity to homes and businesses in much of Spain's second largest city. City officials said the blackout began around 11am and was affecting traffic lights in much of the city centre. The blackout continued for at least three hours. AP

Hospital in the dark for two hours

Services at the Prince of Wales Hospital were interrupted by a power blackout yesterday, caused by damage to two underground high-voltage cables.

The blackout occurred at 3:20pm when construction workers, who were doing renovation work for the hospital, accidentally damaged the cables, a spokesman for the hospital said.

Power was restored two hours later.

Blackouts halt lifts and cut off water

Two power blackouts trapped dozens of people in lifts at Mei Foo yesterday.

The blackouts in Phase V of the Mei Foo Sun Chuen estate at Lai Chi Kok also halted water supply to 12 blocks of flats for nearly seven hours.

A man dines unperturbed at City Hall after it was hit by an 11-hour blackout early yesterday, leaving all events suspended or cancelled until the afternoon.

The library, restaurants, exhibition gallery and theatre were closed during the power cut as government technicians worked to tackle the problem, caused by a faulty underground power cable in the 42-year-old building.
