Unacceptable levels were found in samples from hotpot restaurants across the city, a popular dining destination for Hongkongers. A possible carcinogen banned in food production was also found in samples.

Other names it goes by Acetic acid, disodium salt, disodium edetate.

What's it used in? Moisturisers and cleansers.

What does it do? Improves the stability of cosmetic formulas and allows other ingredients to penetrate the skin.

Any controversy? Studies have linked it to neurotoxicity and organ system toxicity.

Meat had banned substance

Food watchdogs have found 15 meat samples containing the banned preservative sulfur dioxide, which traders use in order to make meat look fresher.

The samples were among 321 the Centre for Food Safety collected across the city between July and last month.

Facial moisturiser, anti-ageing moisturiser, sunscreen, facial and body cleansers, foundation and concealer, eye shadow, lipstick and shampoo.

What's its function?

Synthetic preservative.
