Front of old shophouse saved in hotel development

A developer will preserve part of a 74-year-old shophouse in Mong Kok after being offered an incentive by the government.

The front portion of the grade-three historical building at 179 Prince Edward Road West, built by a top manager of the China Motor Bus Company, will remain while a 13-storey hotel rises behind it.

Three injured as minibus overturns

Three passengers were injured when a minibus hit railings, toppled over and crashed into a car in Mong Kok. The red minibus, which was travelling from Lam Tin to Mong Kok, struck the railings and a traffic light after turning from Prince Edward Road West into Earl Street. Three passengers, aged between 29 and 50, were slightly injured. They were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Two firemen hurt in explosion

Two firemen were injured when a roadside electricity distribution box they were examining exploded. They had been sent to the scene after smoke was reported coming from the box at the junction of Lai Chi Kok Road and Prince Edward Road West, Mong Kok, at 9.30pm. They were taken to hospital with slight eye and ear injuries. A commander said a short-circuit had caused the fire.

Drugs seized at airport

Customs officers seized drugs worth more than HK$1.1 million in two days at the airport. Four kilos of cannabis resin worth HK$288,000 was found in the soles of shoes of four passengers on Saturday and 1.47kg of cocaine worth HK$830,000 was seized from a passenger the following day. Customs has cracked 13 drug cases at the airport since late March.

Crash puts officer in coma

A car driven by an off-duty police officer, 38, hit a bus stop near the Regal Kai Tak Hotel in the eastbound lane of Prince Edward Road East, Kowloon City. He was taken to Queen Elizabeth hospital in a coma and his condition was described as stable.

Monkey stays a leap ahead of the law during concrete jungle jaunt

A monkey kept one step ahead of the law in an 8.5-hour escapade yesterday during which it scaled a police station, tried to hitch a ride on the MTR and stole a bag of cakes from a passer-by.

The macaque was first spotted climbing a tree outside Mongkok Police Station in Prince Edward Road West at about 8.30am.
