Call for direct US talks with Kim Jong-un. Photo: AFP

It was shocking to see the woeful ignorance of the basic principles of security betrayed by Ms Regina Ip. For someone who was once secretary for security, not to have an understanding of identification and authentication, and the difference between them, is a very sad reflection of the calibre of politicians here.

If you must curse, at least get it right

Lawrence Ma Yan-kwok

Legislators should not curse in public, especially not in English. If nothing else, they don't know how to do it properly. Take the case of Lawrence Ma Yan-kwok, who denounced pan-democratic lawmaker "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung as "not a f**king Chinese" in the Legislative Council this week.

Clean up your act

Music is a way of life. It brings joy and happiness to the soul. But unfortunately some songwriters nowadays think using foul language in their lyrics is necessary.

Since songs and music are one of the most popular forms of entertainment, young people are likely to come across this language and think it's acceptable to use it themselves.

HOLLYWOOD WEST

You'd think Hollywood was bereft of a really good scandal these days, given how the spotlight has been so firmly fixated on a soap actor and how he didn't call someone a faggot.

Watch your mouth

SOME THINK it is cool. Others find it totally offensive, and it appears most of us can no longer escape from it. Foul language, or swearing, is so prevalent among young people it has become a culture of its own.

Swearing may be commonplace, but that doesn't make it good

Almost anywhere you go - strolling down the street, in a shop, even in school - it's not unusual to hear swear words. In fact, to put it the other way 'round, it would be rather surprising if you didn't hear them.

Rude word acceptable in TV spheres

Rough talk isn't smart

Foul language is becoming far too common among young people these days.

Consider the following scene: an impatient-looking teenage girl is using a pay phone. She is calling her boyfriend who has failed to turn up for a date.

ICONS OF OUR TIME

NAME: The Old China Hand.

OR: The bitter old expat who sits in bars around town (either tatty pubs or low-end private members' clubs), moaning that life in Hong Kong isn't what it was.

AGE: Usually old enough to have a couple of divorces under his belt, and at least one resentful teenager at school overseas somewhere.
