Legality of Provisional legislature

Tung Chee-hwa was confident yesterday of winning the legal challenge.

'Hong Kong is a society of the rule of law but it is also a society in which everybody can speak up, that is our strength.

'These are the issues being challenged and the court will decide what is right and I am very confident that we'll win these cases,' he said.

Challenge to Provisional Legislature welcomed

Anthony Chow and Christopher Chan welcomed the Democratic Party's planned legal challenge to the provisional legislature.

Mr Chow said a court decision would help remove uncertainty.

'The Law Society thinks that the earlier the challenge, the better,' he said.

The Basic Law via Annex I says that the first Chief Executive (CE) shall be selected according to National People's Congress (NPC) Decision, April 4, 1990.

Hence, the selection method is part of the Basic Law.
