Increased demand for grade-A office space from domestic and foreign financial firms has led rents in Shanghai's Pudong area to exceed those in Puxi, the city's traditional central business district.

A Zhuhai businessman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for swindling Gaolan port authorities out of 19 million yuan (HK$23.3 million) through various schemes including the promise of kickbacks, Southern Metropolis Daily reported. Wang Junhua, who controlled several aquaculture facilities near the port, was also fined 34.5 million yuan by the Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court on Monday. The court dismissed charges that Wang was involved in organised crime.

Shanghai Pudong Airport plans to lift capacity 80pc

Shanghai Pudong Airport says it plans a big expansion of Terminal One, lifting the terminal's capacity for passengers 80 per cent to meet rising demand at the mainland's busiest international airport as part of a more than 1.2 billion yuan (HK$1.47 billion) upgrade.

The upgrade is part of the Shanghai government's plans to grow the city as an international air hub.
