Home-alone children suffer serious burns

Two children, left alone at home, suffered serious burns in a fire yesterday morning inside a locked flat in a building with a malfunctioning water pump.

A girl, two, is in critical condition at Prince of Wales Hospital, while her brother, three, is in serious condition.

Shock risk prompts aquarium pump recall

Two models of Hydor aquarium water pumps are being recalled because of a possible risk of electric shock. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department had asked consumers to stop using Koralia 2 and Koralia 3 models that bear the batch numbers 644, 651, 703 and 707. A department test had found the pumps could have an electrical problem.

Design row delays flood-prevention project

Objections force redraw, pushing completion to 2010

A flood-prevention project for Central and Western District will be delayed a year, until 2010, because of red tape and design changes. The $200 million project, proposed as early as 1999 to divert floodwater into an underground tank, has been hit by a row over the selection of a site for its pump house.

A local woman has accused Hong Kong's only official Mercedes-Benz dealer of 'legalised extortion' after being told it would cost $12,398 to fix her car's windscreen wipers.

The quote - from Aberdeen's Zung Fu dealership - included $7,398 for a new water pump and '$5,000 or so' for labour, according to the woman, who wanted to be identified only as Jane.

Discharge brings tough penalties

An United States federal court has ordered a Texas-based shipping company to pay US$50,000 in fines and make restitution of $200,000 for illegally pumping oily bilge water into the Atlantic Ocean in 1993.

Ocean Chemical Carriers Inc also was ordered to serve two years probation after the Frances Hammer discharged 272,400 litres of oily waste into the sea.

China supply still flows

WATER is still pumping in from China even though local reservoirs have a 216-day supply after recent rains, the Water Supplies Department said.

Knutsen order

NORWEGIAN shipowner Knutsen OAS has ordered liquid cargo handling systems from Kvaerner Eureka for its two latest 140,000-deadweight-tonne shuttle tankers.

The double-hull tankers, being built at the Puerto Real yard in Spain, will utilise a pump-room design with four conventional cargo pumps.
