With their mohawks and black studded jackets, Kyaw Kyaw and his punk buddies are easy to spot on the streets of Yangon. They hang out at a roadside stall just up from Sule Pagoda most afternoons, attracting the attention of tourists who stop and stare.

Unknown pleasures

When people say 'punk is dead', they aren't always talking about the music. It's often an attitude that they're referring to. The Sex Pistols weren't particularly good musicians, but what they had over the rest was insolence, power, energy and ferocity.

The Flowers of Romance Public Image Ltd Virgin

It was three years since the Sex Pistols had broken up, and frontman Johnny Rotten had changed his name back to plain old John Lydon. He was with his new band, Public Image Ltd (PiL for short), on stage at the New York rock club The Ritz just as a riot was unfolding.

Sounds infectious

The Vaccines are almost contrarian in their insistence on straight-ahead guitar pop. They are, after all, an indie band at a time when the indie trends are working in the opposite direction: big, flashy dance-pop (Friendly Fires; M83; Gang Gang Dance); introverted disaffected melancholia (Bon Iver; Grizzly Bear; Deerhunter); or soulful dubstep (James Blake; Burial).

You'll be punk'd and you'll like it

He's partial to wearing schoolgirl gymslips, has often gone before an audience in a dress and, on at least one occasion, got so drunk that he stripped on stage and clenched a banana between his buttocks

The Vivian Girls

The Vivian Girls Grappa's Cellar, July 9

Hong Kong has always had the potential to become one of the hottest cities in Asia for live music, and it sure felt like we'd arrived last weekend when US trio the Vivian Girls dropped in for a live show.

Jan 15, 8pm, Grappa's Cellar

It may be 2011, but if you've got a nostalgic itch for something that takes you back to the days when pop artists weren't clad in neon-coloured designer suits or directing product placement videos, then retro band Logo could be for you.

Pretty in punk

Rocker Gloomy Kwok Siu-fan looks into a mirror and smiles. Not long ago he would have felt ridiculous in make-up, but this afternoon he feels he has put on the perfect face for his photo session as the lead singer of Paranoid.

Pink Flag Wire (Restless Records)

January 14, 1978, marked the day that punk gave way to arguably the most prolific, varied and exciting of all eras in modern music. The final chaotic Sex Pistols gig in San Francisco closed the door on the defining genre of the 70s and opened another to the post-punk movement, which was to spawn some of rock's best music.

When is a punk band not a punk band? When it's Penetration, that's when. After establishing their name with two brash punk singles, the band hired a young heavy metal guitarist, radically reworked their sound and released Moving Targets, their exceptional debut LP.
