Mohawks in Myanmar: punk rock runs wild in Yangon

With their mohawks and black studded jackets, Kyaw Kyaw and his punk buddies are easy to spot on the streets of Yangon. They hang out at a roadside stall just up from Sule Pagoda most afternoons, attracting the attention of tourists who stop and stare.

Unknown pleasures

When people say 'punk is dead', they aren't always talking about the music. It's often an attitude that they're referring to. The Sex Pistols weren't particularly good musicians, but what they had over the rest was insolence, power, energy and ferocity.

Thomas Blakk

Who started it? Just launched in Hong Kong, Thomas Blakk, the man and his eponymous brand, are based in Florence, Italy. Having worked under the aegis of Pauric Sweeney, Manish Arora and other innovative designers, last year Blakk set up his own bag label, which he describes as 'technical, punk, minimalist and futuristic'.

Sounds infectious

The Vaccines are almost contrarian in their insistence on straight-ahead guitar pop. They are, after all, an indie band at a time when the indie trends are working in the opposite direction: big, flashy dance-pop (Friendly Fires; M83; Gang Gang Dance); introverted disaffected melancholia (Bon Iver; Grizzly Bear; Deerhunter); or soulful dubstep (James Blake; Burial).

Hipsters out in force as punk goes for pink

The city's hipsters partied up a storm at the Pink is Punk party co-hosted by Lane Crawford and Marcelo Burlon, the Milan-based fashion editor, style guru and nightclub king. Burlon manned the decks for the party on Friday at the 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, while local bands The Yours and Proust provided the live music.
