French puppeteer pulls a few strings to give Landmark shoppers a window on Parisian life

French puppeteer Jean-Claude Dehix has been creating window displays for the Printemps department store in Paris for more than 30 years, and this year he's brought the tradition to Hong Kong. The craftsman has created a set of puppets that have been set amid iconic Parisian backdrops at the Landmark mall in Central.

Little puppets, big world

Jean-Claude Dehix's first memory of puppets was as a seven-year-old boy in France. It was a scene created by his puppeteer father.

'There were two dogs, and they were both playing on swings, one pushing the other,' he recalls.

'That scene remains in my mind. It's something that strikes me even today.'

Gags aplenty as gang reunites

Five minutes into The Muppets, and the thought dawns on you: there's an innate foolishness in seeing live characters singing and interacting with felt-clad puppets.

You half expect co-writer, executive producer and star Jason Segel to burst out of his character, stare directly at the camera and say: 'Gotcha! I had you going there, didn't I?'

Muppets: together again

Comedy often comes at the expense of someone or something unfortunate. Not the Muppets' brand of comedy, however; or at least to a much lesser extent. The zany characters that make up the Muppets gang thrive on wholesome family-oriented entertainment, all with a dash of Muppets mayhem.

Puppets dancing on water

In many cultures, puppets have been used to tell stories and folktales. Most forms of puppetry involve dolls controlled by puppeteers performing on a stage. In Vietnam, that stage is a pool of water.

The 1,000-year-old art of water puppetry began when farmers put on shows to entertain villagers during the rainy season when their fields were flooded.

Absurd, but worth a look

Admittedly, The Beaver is one of the least attractive films of the year: a grown man with a beaver hand puppet is as bizarre an image as it is creepy. But suppress your preconceived notions of absurdity, bring plenty of patience and you'll be rewarded with a film that's worth watching.
