Laws must be updated to save pets from abuse

Hong Kong likes to think of itself as a caring society. We're undeniably charitable and devote a large part of our financial resources to the needs of the least well-off in society. But that devotion doesn't extend to the well-being of animals, thousands of which are put to death each year because no one wants them.

The boy who bought a lame puppy

A boy once went to a pet shop looking for a dog. He chose a lame one from a litter of five pups.

'You don't want to buy that little dog,' said the pet shop owner. 'He's never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you.'

Doggy story sends message to pet owners

The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Hong Kong (SPCAHK) has linked up with Golden Scene to bring to Hong Kong the movie premiere of Japanese-produced 10 Promises to My Dog.

The film is a touching story set in modern Japan about a 14-year-old schoolgirl who finds a puppy in her garden, and asks her mother that cliched question: 'Can I keep it?'

Naughty puppy, nutty owner

You've heard how some Hong Kong pet owners are absolutely bonkers about their animals, treating them like they are their own children. A reader wrote in, swearing that what he witnessed in a Chinese teahouse in Happy Valley early this week was absolutely true.

A Bite of Love

Starring: Nawarat Grace Techaratana-prasert, Patcharasri Benjamas

Director: Siwaporn Pongsuwan

On paper, A Bite of Love reads like yet another tear-jerker exploiting the hackneyed theme of a pure and innocent bond between a child and a dog being torn apart by the big, bad world of cynical adults.

Blaming the US for Iraq fuels the terrorist cause

What a wonderful solution to the terrorist threat - withdraw, concede they have beaten us, and the free world will cower behind its fortress walls ('Pull troops from Iraq', July 25).

That would leave the oppressed peoples of the world to sort out their own problems. What wonderful slaughter that would bring - what absolute and dangerous nonsense!

Pet projects

Unlike other developed cities, Hong Kong's pet shops are allowed to display and sell cute puppies and kittens to attract the impulse buyer. Many of these animals arrive from the mainland already infected with deadly viruses such as parvo. Pet shops often sell 'fat' animals that, weeks after they are sold, give birth to a litter.
