Pusan: Hong Kong's newly crowned world windsurfing champion Lee Lai-shan took a giant step closer to her quest for a ninth Asian title as she breezed to victory in all three races yesterday to add to her wins in the opening two races at the Asian Championships.

Injured gymnasts miss Pusan trip

Two female gymnasts have been left out of the Hong Kong squad for the East Asian Games after failing their medical tests.

Teenagers Cheung Sin-man and Wut Fung-yin were asked to return their Hong Kong crests after team doctor Julian Chang ruled that they would be unable to compete in the May 10-19 Games in Pusan, South Korea.

Jutha says freighter insured

Jutha Maritime says its ship which sank in South Korean waters on New Year's Day - Jutha Jessica - was insured for 50 million baht (about HK$15 million).

A Jutha official said the Jutha Jessica, carrying 2,000 tonnes of steel from Japan, broke in two last Wednesday after it hit a rock in heavy seas off Pusan. Five Thai crew members were reported missing.

HK ship sinks in collision at sea

THE Hong Kong-managed Alexandria sank at the weekend after a collision with the 2,686-gross tonnes Xin Hua 7, owned by Shanghai Hai Xing Shipping.

According to news agency reports, the Liberian-flagged Alexandria, managed by Ahrenkiel Shipping, Hong Kong, was on loaded passage with 384 containers from Pusan to Keelung. All 24 crew were rescued.

Japanese groups opt for Pusan

JAPAN'S general trading companies and exporters are reportedly trying to move their key container ports from Yokohama and Kobe to Pusan in South Korea to cut rising distribution costs caused by the appreciating yen.

At the request of Japanese firms and autonomous organisations, more container services have been opened between Pusan and smaller Japanese ports.

Seoul boosts coastal traffic

SOUTH Korea's coastal shipping companies will get tax breaks and other financial benefits in the wake of government measures designed to ease acute congestion on the roads.

By 2001, a total of 330 billion won (about HK$3.3 billion) will be spent on building 22 berths for coastal ships at Inchon, Pusan, Asan and Daesan.

Pusan joins network

CHINA Ocean Shipping Co Container Line will launch regular services to Pusan, South Korea, next month as part of its North American operations.

The planned Pusan call will become part of the carrier's Pacific Southwest (PSW) shuttle service, in a port-of-call rotation including Pusan (Tuesdays), Kobe (Thursdays), Long Beach (Saturdays) and Oakland (Mondays).

Korean adds cargo line

KOREAN Air Cargo has launched a new regular freight service between Hong Kong and Pusan.

The service will be addition to its existing weekly flights between Hong Kong and Seoul.

The service will make return trips between Pusan and Hong Kong every Tuesday using a 45-tonne capacity Airbus A330 Freighter.

Shooting query

SEOUL: South Korean police said yesterday they were holding a Russian cargo ship in port to investigate the shooting of one of its crew. A Russian sailor was taken to hospital on Monday after he was found walking along the pier at Pusan with blood flowing down his chest.
