High roads and byroads

Crossing to the western bank of Huang He (Yellow River) at Hukou was a major landmark for us on our 5,000 kilometre Walking Home From Mongolia expedition. Our final sight of the river - which was still almost entirely frozen - was of where it ran south through a narrow gap in the cliffs, spanned by a huge, half-built motorway bridge.

Patriot suffered for beloved art

Huang Xinbo (1916-1980) was a pioneer of the modern Chinese woodcut and, through the influence of Lu Xun (1881-1936), devoted himself to the development and promotion of this art form.

To pay homage to this renowned artist 31 years after his death, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum presents 'Imprint of the Heart: Artistic Journey of Huang Xinbo' from now until February 27.

Curse of the cape

When President Hu Jintao came to the pretty coastal city of Weihai in April, he paid a visit, like emperors before him, to a historic spot in Shandong province known as the 'Cape of Good Hope of China'. This coastal gem is also the most easterly point of China outside Manchuria.

War And Peace

War And Peace: Treasures Of The Qin And Han Dynasties features national treasures such as pieces from the terracotta army of Emperor Qin Shihuang and lifelike pottery of animals from the Han dynasty. Many of the 100 artefacts are being shown in Hong Kong for the first time. The exhibition is part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Mon and Wed-Sat, 10am-6pm; Sun and public holidays, 10am-7pm.
